One hundred senior judges from Supreme, Constitutional, and Commercial Courts in more than 45 countries worldwide will convene in Bucharest, Romania on May 19-21 for the 12th annual International Judicial Conference (IJC), the Furth Family Foundation announced today. The conference will focus on balancing judicial independence and accountability, as well as its continuing themes of ensuring judicial independence and the rule of law.

For the past 11 years the IJC has been sponsored and organized by the Furth Family Foundation, with the cooperation of the Council of Europe, and is co-sponsored this year by the Constitutional Court of Romania, with support from the High Court of Cassation and Justice of Romania and the Ministry of Justice of Romania. Frederick P. Furth, Esq. has been chairman of the IJC since its inception. Mr. Furth is also Chairman of the Furth Family Foundation. Professor Allen Weinstein and Peter G. Kelly, Esq. are serving as this year’s Vice Chairmen.

President of Romania Ion Iliescu, Romanian Constitutional Court President Nicolae Popa; Chief Justice of the Romanian High Court of Cassation and Justice, Paul Florea; and Cristian Diaconescu, Romanian Minister of Justice will participate in the conference.

The annual conference provides an opportunity for justices to develop their perspectives on issues affecting judicial independence and conduct while fostering contact and communication among themselves. Official conference languages are English, Russian, French, Spanish and, this year, Romanian.

Despre CENTRAS

To live in a democracy there must be the rule of law, not the rule of man. For the rule of law to exist there must be an independent judiciary. To have an independent judiciary there must be independent, well-educated, appropriately-compensated justices. This year’s conference, consistent with the last eleven conferences and all future conferences, will be dedicated to the promotion of these principles.
Frederick P. Furth, Esq.
